The #1 Rule of Wedding Planning

I was 12 years old when my Dad took me & my sister to see the movie The Wedding Planner (did I mention how great my dad is?)

Since then, this movie has been on my list of favorites for several reasons:

  1. Jennifer Lopez is the leading lady starring as Mary Fiore

  2. Mary the Wedding Planner is organized & prepared to handle any wedding mishap and is generally great at her job

  3. Remember “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” ?

For those of you who haven’t seen the movie, here’s a plot summary (*Spoiler Alert!* There is a predictable rom-com ending):

Mary (Jennifer Lopez) is  a wedding planner who is on her way to becoming partner in her firm. After landing a  contract for a major wedding, she’s crossing the street & her heel of her shoe gets stuck in a manhole cover while a dumpster rolls towards her. A handsome guy – Steve (Matthew McConaughey) rescues her, it turns out he’s a doctor at a children’s hospital. They go for a romantic movie date in the park and Mary has really fallen for him.

The next time she sees him, she finds out he’s the groom in the big wedding she’s been hired to plan! They pretend not to know each other in front of his fiancee, but of course this becomes an awkward and sometimes comedic situation as Mary continues to plan their wedding. Steve tries to stay committed to his fiancee Fran (who he doesn’t know is also having second thoughts), but can’t ignore his feelings for Mary.

The day of their wedding Steve & Fran have a heart to heart confessing they both are no longer interested in getting married. In true romantic comedy fashion, the movie ends with Steve and Mary on another romantic outdoor movie date.

Now, 14 years after I first saw this movie I have to wonder –  what happened after the credits rolled?

  • Did Mary and Steve continue dating? Did they get married?

  • What was the impact on Mary’s career – – would you hire her? After all, she interfered and stopped a potential marriage by breaking “The Number 1 Rule of wedding planning — Don’t fall in love with the groom”
