Style for Small Spaces: Decor

The Key to Organization

The key to organization is having a designated place for everything.

This principle prevents clutter because if you can’t find a place for something it doesn’t belong in your home -think of a kindergarten classroom or The Container Store.

With a stylish and functional key holder like this, you’ll never have to waste time searching for your keys again.

Black Friday & Boilermakers – Thanksgiving Weekend

Black Friday started with an early morning breakfast at Cracker Barrel. I’m a fan of this new family tradition. Sitting by a crackling fireplace feels great especially on a rainy day. I ordered my favorite Pecan Pancakes with coffee and biscuits.

After breakfast, we went to Michael’s to check out the sales. I found a few fun things for the wedding. My favorite Black Friday deal was our Save the Dates from Vistaprint….. check back for details on Wedding Wednesday!

Saturday the Oaken Bucket game (the annual football rivalry between Purdue University and Indiana University) was on TV in the background while we decorated the Christmas tree.

Sunday was for resting and making a shopping list for Cyber Monday

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend with family friends & sales : )

Christmas Tree Reveal

In college, I didn’t decorate much for Christmas, but one of my best friends who usually hosted the Christmas gift exchange always decorated a small tree and cut out paper snowflakes. The year that I started working, was the year that I decided to decorate and bring the Christmas spirit to my own apartment.

I wanted a small tree that would fit in the little corner of my living room and store easily in the closet, so I bought this 4 ft. pre-lit tree  last year at Super Target for $30.

The tree my family has at home always hosts a variety of ornaments bought at end-of season sales, received as Christmas gifts, or handmade by me or my sister in elementary school.

My tree mostly has  a uniform look of  red and gold ornaments with a  few special ornaments mixed in.

The organized side of me likes the unified theme, but I also feel that it looks more like a department store display. A mix of ornaments  could give it more personality and make it feel like it belongs in a home .

What do you think? Do you prefer an organized color theme or a hodge-podge of ornaments?

Styling Small Spaces: Apartment Decor

The inspiration for this decorating series on Style and Savings happened this summer when I visited a neighbor’s apartment for a get-together. Our apartments are the exact same size and floor plan, but the difference I noticed was the effort she put into decorating and making her place feel like a home while also creating a welcoming atmosphere for her guests.

I decided that even though I’m staying in a small apartment, there is no reason not to add personal touches to make it feel like a home while I’m here.

Having limited time  due to studying for CPA exams, I wanted to start small by focusing on the bathroom first.

Here are couple of “before” pictures:

IMG_1752.JPGI was sad to see my whale friend go, but it was time for something fresh.

IMG_1751.JPGI like to have the products I use to be easy to reach, but this clutter was too much!

I started building a Pinterest board and looking at Target, Walmart, and Bed, Bath & Beyond. I chose my color scheme when I found this shower curtain from Bed, Bath & Beyond called Blaire in Peacock Blue. From there, I just tried to find accessories to match.

The “After” pictures:IMG_1778.JPG

By using coupons and shopping sales at affordable stores, this was a relatively affordable project:

Basket: $9.99

Towel set: $17.50

Shower curtain liner: $5.88

TJ Maxx:

Shower curtain hooks: $3.99

Bed, Bath & Beyond:

(Bed, Bath & Beyond always sends coupons in the mail, also I saved 20% on the shower curtain by purchasing the display since they were out of stock.)

Shower curtain: $17.99

Bath rug:  $9.99

Soap dish: $3.80

Soap dispenser: $6.85

Trash can: $5.32

TOTAL: $81.31

Now that the bathroom is complete, I’m thinking of ideas for the living room. Send me your ideas and links to pictures of your small space decorations!
